GT Faces City-Wide Power Outage: Efforts to Support the Grand Terrace Senior Center and Address Misinformation

The week-long power outage in Grand Terrace posed significant challenges for residents, particularly seniors relying on the city-managed Grand Terrace Senior Center. As the city mobilized to address the crisis, City Manager Konrad, resident Christy Boal, and Grand Terrace Senior Center resident Ida highlighted the efforts made to support the community and clarified misinformation circulating on social media.

City Manager Konrad’s Leadership and Clarifications

City Manager Konrad outlined the city’s swift response to the outage, which began late Tuesday night. By Wednesday morning, the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) was activated, treating the situation as a disaster drill. “We ensured that seniors had access to power for medical devices, heating, and meals within the first day,” Konrad shared.

Konrad emphasized that the Grand Terrace Senior Center is the city’s responsibility and was quickly equipped with generators for charging ventilators and powering refrigerators for medication storage. Indoor propane heaters and lighting were installed to provide comfort and safety. The center was also staffed daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. to offer hot meals, Wi-Fi, and charging stations.

However, Konrad clarified that the nearby senior apartments, which are privately managed, fall outside the city’s jurisdiction. Despite this, the city went above and beyond to assist residents by conducting welfare checks and delivering meals to those unable to leave their apartments. “This was a community effort to ensure no one was left behind,” Konrad stated.

Addressing Social Media Misinformation

Konrad also addressed misinformation and malinformation circulating on social media, including claims of neglect and dire conditions at the Grand Terrace Senior Center. “Within the first day, we had heat, lighting, and food at the Grand Terrace Senior Center. Some of the claims made on Facebook were outright false,” he said, urging residents to rely on official city updates for accurate information.

Christy Boal: A Voice for the Vulnerable

Grand Terrace resident Christy Boal became a passionate advocate for the seniors during the outage. She shared how she coordinated with her husband to assist a bedridden man unable to adjust his position due to the power loss.

“Unless you’ve walked through those dark, cold halls, you cannot fully understand what they’re going through,” Boal said, describing conditions in the senior apartments. She highlighted the lack of essential utilities, including heat and running water, as well as the absence of regular caregiver support.

“I see you, and I hear you,” Boal declared to the seniors, pledging to deliver meals and donations daily. Her heartfelt advocacy underscored the importance of community action in times of need.

Ida’s Perspective: A Resident’s Experience

Grand Terrace Senior Center resident Ida provided a firsthand account of life during the outage. “It was so cold, and we couldn’t even see to move around,” she recalled. Ida, who relies on a CPAP machine, expressed concerns about the lack of power for essential medical devices.

Despite the challenges, Ida praised the city’s efforts, saying, “The city staff came to check on us every day, and that meant a lot.” She also expressed gratitude for the meals and support provided by both the city and caring neighbors like Boal. “We felt like people were looking out for us, and that gave us hope,” Ida shared.

The Grand Terrace power outage showcased the resilience and unity of the community. City Manager Konrad’s leadership, the city’s efforts to support the Grand Terrace Senior Center, and the dedication of residents like Christy Boal demonstrated the collective strength in overcoming adversity.
