Redlands Firefighters responded Sunday afternoon, Feb. 27, to a structure fire at a two-story apartment complex in the 500 block of La Verne Street. No injuries were reported.

Crews arrived shortly after 1 p.m. to find heavy smoke showing from the second floor and roof area. Shortly after arrival, flame erupted from a second floor corner apartment.

The fire quickly extended into the attic space and into two additional apartment units. The Redlands Fire Department along with a second alarm assignment was able to control the fire before it could involve any further apartment units.

Tenants were home at the time of the fire and were able to safely evacuate the apartment without injury. All neighbors were able to exit their apartments safely.

Approximately 15 tenants were displaced due to the fire and related fire, smoke, and water damage. The Red Cross was requested and provided support to those who were displaced.

The second alarm units included the San Bernardino County Fire, Loma Linda Fire, San Manuel Fire, and Colton Fire departments. The Redlands Police Department assisted with traffic control.

It took approximately two hours to extinguish the blaze. Crews remained on scene for about six hours. Damage is estimated at $1 million. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
