State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tony Thurmond, announced on March 10, 2026, that Valley View High School is one of the 408 middle and high schools selected to be honored under the 2026 California Distinguished Schools Award Program. This award program recognizes schools for closing the achievement gap and those demonstrating exceptional student performance.

The school and district shared the incredible news during a school board meeting that same night.

“This milestone is a testament to the partnership between our dedicated teachers, hardworking students, and supportive parents. It is a proud day to be part of the Valley View community,” said School Principal Christopher Gilliatt in a message to his families and staff. “Thank you for making Valley View High such a special place to learn and grow.”

Since its inception in 1985, the California Distinguished Schools Award remains one of the state’s most important ways to celebrate exceptional schools, districts, teachers, and classified employees for their innovation, talent, and success in supporting students.

“As a mother of Valley View High School alumni, this recognition is especially meaningful to me,” said School Board President Brandy Clark. “The school truly deserves to be recognized for their unwavering commitment and dedication to helping students reach their full potential.”

Valley View was recognized in the category of Achievement Gap Closers, highlighting their success in ensuring that all students—regardless of background—are accelerating toward academic excellence and college readiness.

“We are incredibly proud of Valley View High School’s recent statewide recognition,” said Superintendent Alejandro Ruvalcaba. “This recognition is a direct reflection of the collaborative work between our dedicated staff, supportive families and hardworking students.”

The 2026 California Distinguished Schools will be recognized at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim, on April 24, 2026. More information about the award program can be found: https://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/sr/cs/index.asp
